At the Emden\/Ost site, TenneT set up a converter station with a transformer station to convert the energy generated at sea from direct current into three-phase current and feed it into the power grid from there. In total, a distance of 160 kilometers has to be bridged, whereby the wind power is first transported to Hamswehrum via a 130-kilometer long submarine cable to the west of Borkum and from there via a 30 kilometer long underground cable to Emden\/East.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/murasov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Borwin3-OWF-1024x879.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"773\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The foundation stone for the onshore converter station was laid in May 2016, and the station has been technically completed since 2018. The onshore cables were already laid in 2015, the last cable section was laid at sea in spring 2018. In September 2018, the offshore converter station manufactured in Dubai was transported to the North Sea and installed there in October (read more about its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennet.eu\/de\/unser-netz\/offshore-projekte-deutschland\/borwin3\/blog-borwin3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">transport and installation in our German blog<\/a>). Since August 2019, the 900 MW DC connection has been in operation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are delighted to have reached this key milestone with BorWin3 ready for action. It is also the twelfth offshore grid connection project for the transmission system operator.<\/p>\n<p>At the Emden\/East site, TenneT constructed a converter station with a substation to feed the power generated at sea into the onshore extra-high voltage grid.
